On 25 December 2002, the Government of India (GOI) launched the Swajaldhara programme for national rural drinking water supply, based on principles of community management, demand responsiveness and participation. Since 1999, the Sector Reform Pilot Projects (SRPPs) had piloted this approach in 67 districts in 26 (out of 29) states. Swajaldhara scaled up the SRPPs to the whole country, and represents a huge step and a bold break from the supply-driven, target-oriented, government-implemented rural water supply programmes of the past 50 years. It is implemented by the »Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission (RGNDWM) of the Ministry of Rural Development (MORD), GOI.
