Addressing Poverty

Why analyse and address poverty in water projects?

A village and/or habitation community consists of households which are economically diverse and socially and/or politically unequal Analysing Poverty

In most villages those without Secure Access to available domestic and productive water uses are often the poorest households

The unequal access to available water sources is determined by household income security as well as social and political well-being

By default and/or design water projects often benefit most the rich and more powerful in the community

Understanding Water-Poverty Links

Poorest households use the least water, regardless of the availability of water

Richer, Better Off HHs have assured access to available water sources

Securing Access to Water for Domestic and Productive Uses Contributes to addressing Poverty

These links between water and poverty are often overlooked, yet poverty is a key concern in water policy goals.
